Goals and Motivation – Each session begins with the student reviewing their goals for reading and school. The goals range from 100% on the FCAT to straight A’s in school. At first, the students usually do not believe the attainment of their goals is possible. However, once they see their reading skills start to improve, the students realize the goals are reachable. This realization motivates the student to try harder, which again results in more improvement, and a wonderful cycle begins!
Complex Reading - We challenge the students with "complex reading". The complex reading comes from having the student read engaging material several levels above their current reading level. In most cases, we read college level material. This type of reading affords the student several benefits. Students are forced to slow down their reading speed and focus. The reduced speed and increased focus on the reading material allows the student to actually understand 'what they are reading' instead of just reading words. This new insight is a simple and quick fix, which results in immediate confidence improvement for the student.
Discussion - The discussion part of the session focuses on improving the students understanding of the reading material through detailed questions.
Grade level reading – Grade level reading allows the student to engage in reading material appropriate for their grade. After the complex reading, student find their grade level reading noticeably easier to understand and comprehend. The revelation creates confidence in their ability and skills.
Vocabulary list - Each student begins with a new notebook used only for vocabulary words. In our reading sessions, each time we find a word the student does not know, we add the word to the vocabulary list. The addition of the word to the list allows us to review the word and meaning until the student is comfortable with the word’s use and meaning.
Stumble word list – The stumble word list is used to help students improve in enunciating words. The review of the list allows the student to properly say the word is other readings.
